Independent UK gas and electricity supplier OVO Energy was established in 2009 by entrepreneur Stephen Fitzpatrick.
Seven years on, OVO has attracted 700,000 customers, created more than 1,200 jobs, and has offices in Bristol and London, as well as regional field force and retail teams.
The Scale-Up Business of the Year accolade was awarded to OVO Energy as it is an outstanding example of a high growth business that has broken into an established market and used innovation to acquire hundreds of thousands of customers and significant revenues. The company is creating jobs and wealth, and was able to show the judging panel strong staff and customer engagement. It also demonstrated all the attributes of a sustainable and purposeful disruptor in a market dominated by a small number of major players.
Stephen Fitzpatrick commented: “Starting a business was not the hard part — what has felt like a bigger challenge is keeping our culture internally and externally while growing at the pace we have. Our aim is to work as a sustainable, mature business while also staying agile and innovative to ensure we meet and exceed our customers’ expectations.”
Chris Houghton, Chief Financial Officer of OVO Energy added, “We have a great belief in what we’re doing, and whilst there’s success in that, it’s always great to be recognised by your peers, so it was a very special night for us.”
