The Smith & Williamson Scale-Up Business of the Year

As a corporate founder of the newly formed Scale-Up Institute, Smith & Williamson is delighted to sponsor the inaugural ‘Scale-Up Business of the Year’ category. The criteria to enter is detailed below.

Recognising a market leading increase in sales, headcount, profitability, market share or geographical expansion over the last three years, this Award will go to the business demonstrating the highest levels of growth and a robust plan for sustainable financial performance. Open to any UK-based scale-up with a current turnover of not less than £5m per annum, judges will look for the business that can best demonstrate:

  • Market leading growth
  • Strong financial performance
  • Outstanding leadership and management
  • Innovation in products, services or processes
  • Exceptional customer service
  • High levels of staff engagement
  • An ethical approach to business


In this category judges will compare the extent to which each entrant has demonstrated excellence in the following areas:

Entry requirements

In no more than 50 words please explain what your organisation does and the industry or sector in which it operates

In no more than 500 words please explain why your business should win this award (this should be endorsed by the CEO/leader/senior director with contact details).

You can provide up to 1000 words in supplementary information.

Judges will be looking for:

  • A description of your growth strategy, how growth is defined, market trends or factors which have shaped it, key targets and what has been achieved as a result
  • Examples of how the growth strategy has been shaped, led or managed with examples of structures, leadership buy in and the context to the growth
  • Evidence of how employees and key stakeholders have been motivated to deliver growth objectives
  • How customer service has aligned to growth with examples or data to support ROI
  • How corporate responsibility and sustainability has been defined within your organisation and how values /objectives align to your growth strategy
  • Evidence of innovation and how it has supported your growth strategy

Please provide a top line revenue and net profit figure for the current year, previous year and forecast (if possible) for the next year of trading. This question will relate to the growth and financial performance element of the criteria.

Optional: In a summary of no more than 250 words, please state why your key business achievements are significant for your market sector or industry. Please note that the answer to this question may be used in PR related to your entry if it is short-listed.

Rules of entry

  • Fully completed entry forms must be submitted online at by 5pm on 20 May 2016.
  • If payment for your entry is not received by 13 June it will be withdrawn from short-listing.
  • To ensure the highest possible score, please answer all questions and only include information that is relevant to the specific criteria.
  • The National Business Awards reserves the right, after consultation with the entrant, to move submissions to a more appropriate category.
  • Once a candidate has been announced as a finalist, it cannot withdraw from the competition.
  • All information supplied by entrants will be treated in the strictest confidence, with all judges obliged to sign non-disclosure agreements.
  • Information supplied to UBM Information Ltd may be used for publication (where you provide details for inclusion in our directories or catalogues and on our websites) and also to provide you with information about our products or services in the form of direct marketing activity by phone, fax or post. Information may also be made available to third parties on a list lease or list rental basis for the purpose of direct marketing.   • Entry does not grant an organisation rights to use the National Business Awards name, logo, or images without the express written approval of the National Business Awards and UBM Information. Only finalists and winners will be granted permission to use an Awards logo.


  • Judges will consider each entry submission against the category criteria and their own discretion based on their relevant expertise.
  • The role of the Chair of Judges is to clarify the criteria, and to mediate in the event of a draw to determine a clear winner. The Chair of Judges does not have a casting vote.
  • Judges’ decisions are final and binding; and no discussions or correspondence will be entered into relating to any of their decisions.
  • UBM Information Ltd is not liable for any costs incurred by candidate organisations during the judging process.
  • Any entrant who, in the opinion of the judges or the organisers, is perceived to have harassed or bribed any member of the panel or the National Business Awards team will have their entry disqualified.
  • The National Business Awards reserves the right to withdraw an entry from the judging process at any time if the entry is deemed inappropriate for any reason.
  • If it is found that any entrant has knowingly provided false information on their application for their entry, the National Business Awards reserves the right to withdraw any award at any time submitted by that organisation.
