David Cobb

Areas of expertise

Landed estates; charitable trusts; bespoke family open-ended investment companies (OEICs); family office disputes.

Over the course of a career spanning more than 25 years with Smith & Williamson, David has advised a number of significant landed and commercial families, some with substantial heritage assets.

He has helped to restructure trusts and assets to help a number of families meet their medium to long-term financial needs through the use of tax-efficient investment vehicles such as bespoke family OEICs, working alongside our tax specialists.

As a trusted adviser to different generations of families over many years, David has gained a wealth of experience in dealing with sometimes challenging and sensitive succession issues and family disputes.

David took on a new role as head of the firm’s investment management and banking division in 2007.

Notable achievements

  • Advising a family on succession planning, including the extraction of sufficient capital for each generation to enable long-term ownership to vest in funds for grandchildren and great grandchildren.
  • Restructuring the investment approach for a significant European fortune trapped in French life insurance contracts into a Dublin-based private OEIC, to ensure a tailored investment outcome appropriate to the specific needs of the individual.
  • Advising, in conjunction with private client tax colleagues, clients who are either domiciled or resident abroad regarding appropriate offshore structures to meet their particular circumstances.
  • Recommended UHNW Wealth Manager, 2017.
