Insolvency of Boris Becker to be managed at Smith & Williamson

25 August 2017

Mark Ford, Finbarr O’Connell and Gil Lemon, all of Smith & Williamson LLP, were appointed as joint trustees of the bankruptcy estate of Boris Becker on 21 August 2017.

Mr Becker, the three time Wimbledon champion, tennis coach and television commentator, had been involved a long-running dispute with a private bank over a range of loan facilities. The twice French Open and Australian Open winner was declared bankrupt on 21 June 2017 following an order from the High Court of Justice.

“Personal insolvencies can often be complex, time sensitive and require working across various international jurisdictions” said Mark Ford.

“As Mr Becker’s bankruptcy trustees, our primary purpose is to realise the assets in Mr Becker’s bankruptcy estate and to pay any net funds received to Mr Becker’s bankruptcy creditors according to their legal position. Anyone who is aware of any matters which may be of assistance to the joint trustees in the performance of their duties is encouraged to get in touch.”

The Official Receiver will remain involved in this matter, alongside the joint trustees, to complete its statutory duty to investigate the conduct and affairs of Mr Becker in the lead up to his bankruptcy.

The complex nature of personal insolvencies often requires a multi-faceted approach. The team within Smith & Williamson will be able to draw on the internal expertise of their tax, pension advisory and investment management colleagues as well as external advisers through our global advisory network, Nexia International, where appropriate.
