Application and Assessment Process – Investment Management

Our recruitment season opens in early September and we add all of our available vacancies onto the website at this time. Once our vacancies are filled, we close them to new applications, so we strongly recommend you apply as early as possible to give yourself the best chance of success.

Online application and testing

The first stage of our recruitment process is to complete an online application form detailing your personal, education and employment details. Please make sure the information you provide in this section is accurate as this will form part of our screening process, should you receive a job offer from us.

You will then be required to complete a selection of motivational and competency based questions. This should take no longer than 60 minutes to complete.

You will then be invited to take part in online numerical and verbal reasoning tests (please see the recruiter tips section of the website to read our advice on how to prepare and be successful in these tests).

On successful completion of your tests your application will be reviewed by a member of our recruitment team. We aim to get back to you with a result, via email, within 10 working days. We receive a high volume of applications between September and December, so please bear with us during this time.

Telephone interview

If you pass the online tests and your application is successfully screened, you will be invited to take part in a telephone interview with a member of our trainee recruitment team. We will contact you via email to arrange a time for your interview.

The interview itself will take up to 40 minutes so please ensure you have the available time and are somewhere quiet where you won’t be interrupted. The telephone interview will contain both motivational and competency based questions.
Following your telephone interview you can expect to hear back from us within five working days. Please note this may take slightly longer during our busy recruitment season (September to December).

You will receive the result of your interview via email. Please note we are unable to provide feedback at this stage of the process due to high volumes of applications.

Assessment centre

The next stage of our recruitment process will be an assessment centre at one of our offices. If you are successful in your telephone interview, we will email you a link to book into one of our assessment centres. At this point you will be provided with further details on what to expect. Final stage interview

The final stage of the recruitment process is a presentation and final round interview with a partner from the investment management team. You will be provided with the presentation question on arrival at the interview. This will take place in the office to which you are applying to.

Travel Costs

Smith & Williamson will reimburse your travel costs following an assessment centre or interview up to a sum of £100. If your travel costs exceed this amount, please contact a member of our recruitment team to gain approval before you book.

What to expect at an assessment centre

Your assessment centre will include a written case study, a group exercise with other candidates and additional testing on your verbal and numerical skills. We will also provide lunch and give you a chance to meet with our current trainees.

Members of the graduate recruitment team will be present for the whole day to answer any questions you may have. We will also provide further details of the programme you are applying to and will let you know what happens next.

Written exercise

We will provide you with full instructions and information to read through before you complete your timed written exercise. It is based on a fictitious business case and all the information needed will be provided.

Group exercise

Every candidate will take part in a group exercise during the assessment centre. Full instructions will be provided on the day and, like the written exercise, it is based on a fictitious business case, sono specific business knowledge is required. Feedback

Please expect to hear the result from your assessment centre within three working days. We will communicate the result via email, however we are happy to provide constructive feedback following your assessment centre via telephone. Please contact one of our recruiters to ask for this.
