Application and Assessment Process – Investment Management
Our recruitment season opens in early September and we add all of our available vacancies onto the website at this time. Once our vacancies are filled, we close them to new applications, so we strongly recommend you apply as early as possible to give yourself the best chance of success.
The first stage of our recruitment process is to complete an online application form detailing your personal, education and employment details. Please make sure the information you provide in this section is accurate as this will form part of our screening process, should you receive a job offer from us.
You will then be required to complete a selection of motivational and competency- based questions.
Once you’ve completed our application form you’ll be invited to take part in online numerical and verbal reasoning tests (please see the recruiter tips section of the website to read our advice on how to prepare and be successful in these tests).
On successful completion of your tests your application will be reviewed by a member of our early careers recruitment team. We aim to get back to you with a result, via email, as soon as possible. We receive a high volume of applications between September and December, so please bear with us during this time.
If you pass the online tests and your application is successfully screened, you will be invited to take part in a video interview. We will send you an email with a link to take part in a video interview, here you will find instructions on what to expect during the interview and have the chance to practice a few questions.
The interview itself will take up to 40 minutes so please ensure you have the available time and are somewhere quiet without any interruptions – for more advice please see the recruiter tips section of the website. The video interview will contain both motivational and competency-based questions.
Once you have completed your video interview, your responses will be reviewed by a member of our early careers recruitment team. You can expect to hear back from us within 15 working days, please note this may take slightly longer during our busy recruitment season (September to December).
You will receive the result of your video interview via email, please note we are unable to provide feedback at this stage of the process due to high volumes of applications.
The next stage of our recruitment process will be an assessment centre. These previously took place in our offices but due to the pandemic we have amended to take place virtually. If you are successful in your video interview, we will email you to make arrangements.
The final stage of the recruitment process is a presentation and final round interview with two partners from the investment management team. You will be provided with the presentation question on the day. This will take place virtually.
What to expect at an assessment centre
You will receive a warm welcome by our recruitment team who will facilitate a written case-study and a group exercise with other candidates.
We will provide you with full instructions and information to read through before you complete your timed written exercise. It is based on a fictitious business case and all the information needed will be provided.
Every candidate will take part in a group exercise during the assessment centre. Full instructions will be provided on the day and, like the written exercise, it is based on a fictitious business case, so no specific business knowledge is required. For practical advice on how to be successful in your group exercise, please check out our recruiter tips.
Smith & Williamson is an equal opportunities employer, so if you require any reasonable adjustments in the lead up to, or during, our assessment day, please contact our recruitment team and we will be happy to provide the assistance you require.
Please expect to hear the result from your assessment centre within three working days. We are happy to provide constructive feedback following your assessment centre via telephone.
