Application Process - Professional services
Our recruitment season opens in early September and we will add our available vacancies onto the website at this time. We recruit on a rolling basis, so we strongly recommend you apply as early as possible to give yourself the best chance of success!
The first stage of our recruitment process is an online application for your personal details and background, this should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete. Please make sure the information you provide in this section is accurate as this will form part of our screening process, should you receive a job offer from us.
Once this has been completed you will be forwarded directly to our online numerical and verbal reasoning tests (please see the recruiter tips section of the website to read our advice on how to prepare and be successful in these tests).
If you are successful in these tests, your application will be reviewed by a member of our recruitment team. We aim to get back to you with a result via email within 10 working days. Please note we receive a high volume of applications between September and December so please bear with us during this time.
If you pass the online tests and your application is successfully screened, you will be invited to take part in a video interview. We will send you an email with a link to take part in a video interview, here you will find instructions on what to expect during the interview and have the chance to practice a few questions.
The interview itself will take up to 30 minutes so please ensure you have the available time and are somewhere quiet without any interruptions – for more advice please see the recruiter tips section of the website. The video interview will contain both motivational and competency-based questions.
Once you have completed your video interview, your responses will be reviewed by a member of our trainee graduate recruitment team. You can expect to hear back from us within 15 working days, please note this may take slightly longer during our busy recruitment season (September to December).
You will receive the result of your video interview via email, please note we are unable to provide feedback at this stage of the process due to high volumes of applications.
The final stage of our recruitment process will be a full day assessment centre in one of our offices. If you are successful in your video interview, we will email you a link to book into one of our assessment centres. Smith & Williamson will reimburse your travel costs following an assessment centre up to a sum of £100. If your travel costs exceed this amount, please contact a member of our recruitment team to gain approval before you book.
What to expect at an assessment centre
Your assessment centre will take place in one of our UK Offices (depending on where you are applying). You will be welcomed by our graduate recruitment team and hear about the company and culture from one of our senior business representatives when you arrive. The day will include a written case study, a group exercise with other candidates and an interview with a senior manager or partner. We will also provide lunch and a chance to mingle and network with our current trainees.
Members of the graduate recruitment team will be present for the whole day to guide you and help answer any questions you have, we will also provide further details of the programme you are applying to and let you know what happens next.
We will provide you with full instructions and information to read through before you complete your written exercise, this is timed. The exercise is based on a fictitious business case, you do not require specific financial knowledge to complete the exercise as all the information you will need will be provided to you.
Every candidate will take part in a group exercise during the assessment centre. The group exercise is a fun part of the day and a highlight for many candidates, so there is no need to be nervous!! Full instructions will be provided on the day and like the written exercise it is based on a fictitious business case, again no specific business knowledge is required. The final part of every assessment centre is the interview with one of our senior managers or partners. The interview will cover competency and motivational questions designed to assess your understanding and interest in the role. This is also the chance to ask any questions you may have about the role and what life is like working for Smith & Williamson.
