Application Process - Professional services
Our recruitment season opens in early September. Once we’ve received enough applications or our vacancies are filled, we close them to new applications. We strongly recommend you apply as early as possible to give yourself the best chance of success.
The first stage of our recruitment process is an online application for your personal details and background, this should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete. Please make sure the information you provide in this section is accurate as this will form part of our screening process, should you receive a job offer from us.
Once this has been completed you will be forwarded directly to our online numerical and verbal reasoning tests (please see the recruiter tips section of the website to read our advice on how to prepare and be successful in these tests).
If you are successful in these tests, your application will be reviewed by a member of our recruitment team. We’ll aim to get back to you with a result via email as soon as we can. Please note, we receive a high volume of applications between September and December so bear with us during this time.
If you pass the online tests and your application is successfully screened, you will be invited to take part in a video interview. We will send you an email with a link to take part in a video interview, here you will find instructions on what to expect during the interview and have the chance to practice a few questions.
The interview itself will take up to 30 minutes so please ensure you have the available time and are somewhere quiet without any interruptions – for more advice please see the recruiter tips section of the website. The video interview will contain both motivational and competency-based questions.
Once you have completed your video interview, your responses will be reviewed by a member of our early careers recruitment team. You can expect to hear back from us within 15 working days, please note this may take slightly longer during our busy recruitment season (September to December).
You will receive the result of your video interview via email, please note we are unable to provide feedback at this stage of the process due to high volumes of applications.
The final stage of our recruitment process will be an assessment centre including an individual interview. These previously took place in our offices but due to the pandemic we have amended to take place virtually across two days to minimise screen fatigue. If you are successful in your video interview, we will email you to make arrangements.
What to expect at an assessment centre
You will receive a warm welcome by our recruitment team who will facilitate a written case-study, a Q&A session with trainees, a group exercise with other candidates, and an interview.
We will provide you with full instructions and information to read through before you complete your written exercise, which is timed. The exercise is based on a fictitious business case, you do not require specific financial knowledge to complete the exercise as all the information you will need will be provided to you.
Q&A with trainees
An opportunity for you to find out more about us by speaking with our trainees in an informal setting.
Every candidate will take part in a group exercise (with 4-6 others) as part of the assessment centre stage. Full instructions will be provided on the day and like the written exercise it is based on a fictitious business case, again no specific business knowledge is required.
The final part is an interview with two managers from the team you are applying for. The interview will cover competency and motivational questions designed to assess your understanding and interest in the role. This is also the chance to ask any questions you may have about the role and what life is like working for Smith & Williamson.
