Trainee Programme

They cover a broad range of areas and are driven towards you becoming ACA, CTA or IAD/CWM qualified. You will genuinely enjoy the responsibility as you manage your own projects for a range of different, real clients.

You’ll get exposure to many different clients and a wide range of industries by taking on real work from the outset and gaining early responsibility. But we don’t throw you in at the deep end — we offer fantastic training, strong support (including from our most senior people), mentoring and the kind of collaborative culture that means there’ll always be someone on hand to offer help and advice. We’re prestigious, but familiar. Here, the atmosphere is friendly and everyone is approachable. We’re all invested in your journey, especially the partners.

Grade Requirements –112 UCAS, Minimum of B in English Literature & Maths GCSE (2:1+ undergraduate degree)

Trainee Roles:

  • Trainee chartered accountant AUDIT– ACA – Level 7 Apprentice - This opportunity is with Nexia Smith & Williamson, an independent company which provides audit and related services to complement Smith & Williamson’s specialist financial advisory services. Working alongside managing and financial directors, you’ll provide advice and solutions that will make a tangible difference to a range of organisations. It’s a great way to build first-hand client experience as you undertake your professional qualification training.
  • Trainee chartered accountant BOS – ACA – Level 7 Apprentice – Sitting within our accounts team you will be working with our clients toprovide advice and solutions that really make a difference. On-the-job training and studying towards your professional qualification will enable you to gain a full understanding of the technical aspects of accountancy and additional financial advisory services.
  • Business tax trainee – Joint ACA/CTA – Level 7 Apprentice – Working closely with our senior tax professionals, you’ll feel yourself improving day-by-day as they teach you the intricacies of their trade. One moment you could be helping a small business ensure they are tax compliant; the next, you could be learning the complex, but fascinating cross-border considerations of international tax. You could even find yourself providing support to a company in the middle of a full-scale tax investigation. This programme will impart all the techniques you need, as well as show you how to communicate effectively with clients and HMRC.
  • Private client tax trainee – Joint ACA/CTA – Level 7 Apprentice – An award-winning private client tax service, advising individuals, businesses and trusts for over 100 years. This is a challenging and constantly evolving area in which your skills will be highly valued by our clients. No two days are ever the same and your unique perspective will influence the finances of a truly diverse range of clients. Our clients include private tax clients and trusts, consisting of high-net worth individuals, non-domiciled individuals, landed estates and professional practices. Engaging your talents to its full potential is important to us, so whatever area you choose to specialise in, we’ve got a variety of opportunities for you.
  • Investment manager – IAM (Level 4) & CWM (Level 7) - After spending your first year soaking up expertise through placements in our investment settlement operations, compliance and front office departments, you’ll join a desk permanently where you’ll begin dealing with clients and developing a highly promising career.
  • Valuations - Working with our experienced valuation specialists, you’ll develop an agile approach and open communication style that will help us get to the heart of the matter and deliver successful outcomes. The valuations you work on could be accounting or tax related, or the context could be even more pressing, such as a shareholder leaving a business, or a matrimonial contention. We’ll show you how to accurately evaluate assets, transactions or entire companies – empowering you to propel your own career using your well-informed judgement.
