Taxation of Cryptocurrencies

Date - 18 October 2018
Time - 08:30 - 10:30
Venue - Smith & Williamson, 25 Moorgate, London, EC2R 6AY

Over the last 18 months, cryptocurrencies have received a lot of attention both from individuals looking to invest in them and companies looking to use them in their businesses. Given cryptocurrencies are a relatively new concept there has been a significant amount of debate about how they should be treated from a regulatory and taxation perspective.

Smith & Williamson has considerable experience working with our clients in the sector and has been liaising closely with HMRC over the treatment of cryptocurrency. We are expecting revised guidance to be issued by HMRC covering the treatment of ‘cryptoassets’ for both individuals and businesses in the coming months.

We are holding a seminar to discuss the taxation of cryptocurrencies and we are pleased to be joined by Dion Seymour, who is leading HMRC’s Cryptoasset team. In the seminar, we will cover the following topics:

  • Background to cryptocurrencies
  • Key tax considerations for individuals
  • Background to Initial Coin Offerings
  • Tax treatment of ICOs
  • HMRC perspective
  • Questions & Answers
