Smith & Williamson has appointed Philip Barker to head its M&A Industrials advisory practice.

Philip Barker

A PwC-qualified Chartered Accountant, Philip has spent his career to date providing corporate finance advice to UK and global engineering businesses across a range of advisory firms.

Over the past 20 years, Philip has established, developed and led Cavendish’s Industrials team. In that time he has advised on numerous high-profile transactions, including the sales of Fandstan Electrical, a specialist manufacturer of electrical equipment for the global transportation sector to Wabtec for £130m; Xtrac, the world’s largest and most successful manufacturer of motorsport transmissions to Inflexion; and James Dewhurst, a leading manufacturer of technical textiles to Sioen Industries for £44m.

The specialist M&A division at Smith & Williamson provides an extensive range of services across the UK, advising on business sales, fundraisings, management buyouts, strategic evaluations and deal structurings. It works closely with Smith & Williamson experts in tax and other areas to provide a comprehensive suite of M&A transactional support services.

The team operates globally through Oaklins International, the world’s most experienced mid-market M&A adviser. These trusted senior advisers take a global view and leverage their deep local connections to get the best results for clients, whether in the UK or internationally.

Brian Livingston, Head of M&A at Smith & Williamson, said: “We are delighted Philip has decided to join us. He is well-connected within the advisory community and has extensive relationships with mid-market industrial companies in both the public and private sectors. He brings a proven track-record of both generating and executing deals in this important sector of the UK economy.”

“This is an important further step in our ambition to grow our services to scale up entrepreneurial companies in our M&A practice at a time when we are experiencing near record levels of deal activity.”

Philip Barker commented: “Smith & Williamson provides me with the perfect platform to continue my interest in the UK engineering and manufacturing mid-market sector. Smith & Williamson has a well-established and deserved reputation within the entrepreneurial business community and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help it expand across the board.”

“I look forward to working with Smith & Williamson’s teams to deliver a comprehensive range of services to clients from M&A advice, through tax and investment management.”
