Six enthusiastic volunteers from the Guildford office of Smith & Williamson had fun gardening at Christopher’s hospice based at Artington, as part of the firm’s support for Shooting Star Children's Hospices. The volunteers got stuck in clearing weeds, preparing a tree bed, pruning, clearing deadwood from a cherry tree and edging borders.

The Guildford office of the financial and professional services group pledged its support to Shooting Star Children’s Hospices for two years in August 2018. The leading children’s hospice charity cares for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families across Surrey and London.

In June, Smith & Williamson presented a £2,000 cheque to Shooting Star Children’s Hospices as a donation. In addition, the office has organised a number of fundraising activities including a quiz night in April at the Seasons Café, Guildford cathedral which was attended by around 120 local business people and staff. Other fundraising activities have included Christmas and Easter bake sales, book sales, an internal quiz evening and several sporting event sweepstakes.

Broma Patel, Corporate Development Manager at Shooting Star Children’s Hospices said, “We are very grateful to the team at Smith & Williamson for their hard work helping to keep the gardens looking beautiful. Our gardens are much loved and provide a fun, safe, calm and sensory environment for the families we support.”

Maggie Lowe, head of the Guildford office of Smith & Williamson said: “We are delighted with the support people in our office have shown for this local charity and we have now donated a total of £6,486 within the first year of support. Christopher’s, which is part of Shooting Star Children’s Hospices, provides fantastic support and facilities on a day-to-day basis for children and their families. As a firm, we look for ways where we can make a positive influence in the communities where we work and like to donate to smaller organisations where our help will make a meaningful difference.”
