Accountancy, tax and investment firm Smith & Williamson is sponsoring the world’s largest history festival in Wiltshire this year.
The Chalke Valley History Festival takes place from 24th – 30th June on a 70-acre site at Broad Chalke, near Salisbury.
Launched in 2011, the festival began as a fundraiser for the local cricket club. Club member and historian James Holland had the idea for a festival but it was James Heneage, founder and former CEO of Ottakar’s bookshops and now a historical novelist, who suggested a festival dedicated to history.
The event now consists of a week of talks, discussions and debates, as well as extensive and immersive living history and historic air displays. Since 2013, the festival has also incorporated the History Festival for Schools.
Last year’s event featured almost 150 speakers and more than 44,000 tickets were sold.
Lisa Ball, Managing Partner of the Salisbury office of Smith & Williamson, who is sponsoring one of the tents at the week-long event, said: “The Chalke Valley History Festival is the largest festival in the world dedicated entirely to history, and we are thrilled to have it here on our doorstep.
“The diversity of talks and events that take place across the week make it such an inspiring festival and Smith & Williamson are excited to be supporting the event.”
Festival director Jane Pleydell-Bouverie added: “I’m delighted with this summer’s tremendous line-up of speakers as well as an exciting programme of living history events for all the family.”
Festival tickets are on sale now. Please contact the ticket office on 01722 781133 or visit www.cvhf.org.uk
