Steve is part of Smith & Williamson’s employment tax and incentives team, having joined the Bristol office in 2007 after being with HMRC for over 20 years.

He advises on all aspects of tax and national insurance for employers and employees but specialises in PAYE, P11D and benefits-related issues and the construction industry scheme (CIS).

His client work includes opportunity spotting, risk management, tax compliance and negotiating with HMRC to minimise penalties following disclosures and visits. Steve also advises on international payroll matters.

Notable achievements

  • Negotiation with HMRC resulting in a substantial reduction to the liability.
  • Detailed discussion with HMRC, which finally agreed the status of a worker to be self-employed, saving the client tax and NI.
  • A potential CIS liability, following questions raised by HMRC, was reduced to nil after discussions.
  • Regular lectures for clients and professional bodies including the Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) and Payroll World.
