Everyone has different needs, aspirations and time horizons. We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach.
Meeting your needs
The core of our service is discretionary investment management of bespoke diversified portfolios. This gives you the peace of mind that your portfolio is being expertly managed on your behalf within agreed parameters carefully matched to your objectives.
Taking time to understand your situation is at the heart of our approach. Your investment manager will help define your objectives, taking into account your current, short-term and long-term requirements. We will construct a portfolio to suit your current needs but recognise that circumstances can change and maintain the necessary flexibility to reflect this.
You will have direct access to your investment manager and the team who help manage your portfolio. This means you can always pick up the phone to someone who will be familiar with your investments.
We are a privately-owned company, majority owned by our partners, staff and former employees. So our interests are closely aligned with yours. We take personal pride in maintaining and building your wealth - often across several generations.
We have been managing our clients’ portfolios for over 100 years, and our independently assessed track record over the last 12 years shows our success in consistently adding value in rising and falling markets.
We will work closely with your other professional advisers where required to help ensure you receive a co-ordinated service.
How we can help
Please remember investment involves risk. The value of investments and the income from them can fall as well as rise and investors may not receive back the original amount invested. Past performance is not a guide to future performance.
We are one of the largest and most respected privately owned private client investment managers in the UK.
We have over a century’s experience in managing private client wealth. The family of our first-ever client remains a client today.
We have around £19.4 billion of funds under management and advice, the majority for private clients, as at 31 March 2020.
We manage a broad range of portfolios from personal savings to institutional-style mandates for wealthier families and charities.
We have more than 170 investment managers, diligently catering for our clients’ individual requirements.
Low staff turnover – with many of our people working with us for 20 years or more – allows for the continuity of client/adviser relationships across many years.
Many of our clients rate us as excellent or above average at meeting their investment objectives.
We have won numerous industry awards that recognise the excellence of our performance and service to high-net-worth clients.

S&W interest rates are applied on a tiered basis, either on a managed rate or reference rate basis depending on currency. Our interest calculation policy and current rates are published on the Schedule of Interest Rates.
Risk Profiles – Our comparator indices
The eight risk profiles we offer clients each have a different portfolio composition, constructed from the major investment asset classes of cash, bonds, alternatives and equities. These strategic asset allocations are based on long-term risk and return histories, and generate the building blocks for portfolios. From these strategic asset allocations our composite comparative indices are formed, which provide a guide to portfolio performance measurement.
Managed Portfolio Service
Smith and Williamson Investment Management offers investors five actively managed, risk-rated portfolios through its Managed Portfolio Service (MPS). The MPS is designed to maximise efficiency and diversification through portfolio composition that is homogenous with other clients on the same risk level. Clients thus benefit from lower costs than other discretionary service types whilst retaining the transaction and cost transparency traditionally missing from unitised multi-asset options (OEIC/NURS).
The MPS model portfolios range from Defensive (lower risk) to Growth (higher risk), depending upon clients’ investment objective and attitude to risk. They have been developed for clients with a minimum of £20,000 to invest, who have no pre-specified investment or tax restrictions, and whose objective is compatible with a risk-led approach. The portfolios invest solely in a range of different collective investment schemes, including open-ended funds (OEICS, unit trusts), investment companies and exchange traded funds (ETFs). This structure offers diversification by asset class and product type, giving our investment managers flexibility to respond to changing market conditions.
The MPS strategies are managed by our Managed Portfolio Service investment team – David Amphlett-Lewis, Genevra Banszky von Ambroz and James Burns.
Each MPS strategy has an associated comparator, their composition is detailed in this document
