Female Founders & Female Investors

At Smith & Williamson we’re passionate about supporting women on both sides of the ‘investment conversation’. The unique nature of S&W means we’re lucky to work closely with both entrepreneurs and investors, and we feel we can really make a positive difference here.

The Female Founder program we have been running is twofold to support both sides of the “dragons den scenario”. It is a conscious decision to support both the female founders in the spotlight that are asking for investment, but also to support the potential female investors giving them the confidence to step up and partake in the ‘grilling’.

As part of the Female Founder program we run ‘masterclass breakfasts’ for smaller growth businesses and ‘thought-leadership lunches’ for more established companies. The Female Investor events are typically workshops to showcase & practice typical investment conversations with founders (the founders that present are conveniently raising funds too).

The program has now expanded to our offices across the country.

Topics include masterclasses educating on financial forecasting, valuations, exit planning, managing childcare-raising finance-and running a business, how to gain experience at board level, how to get pitch-ready and implement your fundraising campaign.

The program sits as a sub-section to our entrepreneurs program and mirrors the intention of the firm to be the one-stop shop for high-growth business, where you can find support for both the individuals and the company through the full business/personal lifecycle.

The main aim is to engage with and share our network of fantastic women.

Our work here has been recognised by S&P Global

"A growing number of firms and nonprofits are working to address the diversity issue in fintech. As one of the founding members of the ScaleUp Institute,  accountancy and professional services firm Smith & Williamson Holdings Ltd. runs workshops...The aim of these is to connect female founders with the wider "ecosystem" including venture capital, and to help them to polish skills such as pitching ideas to investors, Tabitha Luxmoore-Styles, who works in Smith & Williamson's Entrepreneurial team, told S&P Global Market Intelligence.”

It was referenced upon winning Tolley’s Tax Team of the Year 2019 award: "We particularly liked the great work that this team has been doing to improve diversity" in business.

We run a program of events to support female founders & investors. These breakfast’s/lunches/webinars cover a variety of topics: from personal finance, business financial support, ‘how to’s’ on business strategy, as well as roundtables to discuss & problem solve mutual challenges. A previous example of this was Rachel Carrell’s (Founder of Koru Kids) talk on Managing childcare, Raising money and Running a business.
